Filters
Reality is neutral.
That unanswered message. That meeting that didn’t go the way you hoped. That number in your bank account. That person who thinks differently. None of it, on its own, means anything. The meaning comes after.
It comes when the mind puts on its filter: “They ignored me.” “I failed.” “I’m falling short.” “I’m not enough.”
A filter is a piece of language. A story the mind writes on its own, without warning, to explain what’s happening, to shield you from pain, or to control what can’t be controlled. The thought repeats. It becomes a lens. The lens becomes our reality. And without noticing, we suffer over a story we wrote ourselves.
The thoughts from today. The ones that kept coming back. The ones you’ve carried for years. They aren’t true because they repeat. They’re language. And language can build a prison so convincing we end up calling it identity.
Saying “I’m shy” doesn’t make you shy. It holds a thought of shyness in place until it looks like you. Stop believing the thought, and shyness stops making your decisions.
The problem was never the fact. Facts don’t change. The emotional price we put on them does.
When something hurts, the mind asks why. The why goes looking for someone to blame. There’s another question. A quieter one.
What story am I telling?
A thought can’t be argued with. It can’t be pushed out. A thought that’s seen loses its grip. Seeing it, without punishment, is enough.
Put on, the filter tints everything and disappears. In your hand, it’s just glass. Between the two, there’s a small distance. And in that distance is the way to make peace with yourself.
Allowing isn’t giving up. Allowing is saying: there’s room for this. Every time you allow something, you’re bigger than what you allow.
We spend our lives pushing this moment away to reach another one, better, imagined. But this is the only one there is. Without the filter, there’s nothing left to fear.
Reality is neutral. The message is still unanswered. The meeting is over. The number is the same.
Everything stays the same. Except the one looking.
